The find familiar spell allows a character to conjure a bat, cat, crab, frog, hawk, lizard, octopus, owl, poisonous snake, quipper, rat, raven, sea horse, spider, or weasel.
Those familiars cannot attack, but they can scout and move objects and have great game-play value.
What is the best part of having a summoned familiar? They act as a conduit for any spell you cast with a range of touch. So if a player casts a spell with that range, their familiar can do the actual touching, instead of the player.
Casting a spell this way uses the player’s action, and the familiar’s reaction.
Some touch spells:
- Shocking Grasp
- Glyph of warding
- Spare the Dying
- Lesser restoration
- Freedom of Movement
CORRECTION: Yesterday’s newsletter discussed melee spell attacks and mentioned Chill Touch. That is incorrect. The newsletter was supposed to mention Shocking Grasp is a spell that can be used with the Mobile feat. Sorry!
