There are a number of spells that are relatively similar: Charm Person, Friends, Command, Calm emotions, Suggestion, Compulsion, Dominate person, and Geas.
They all allow a somebody to charm another creature and give varying degrees of commands. The differences between each really come down to the nitty gritty of how each spell is worded, so read carefully. However they all pretty much work in a similar way.
The target makes a Wisdom saving throw, which if they fail they become charmed by the caster for a period of time (anywhere from 1 action to forever depending on spell and level). All of the spells except dominate person prevent the caster from forcing the charmed creature from hurting itself – as in, you can’t tell the charmed creature to jump off a cliff. But dance until they are exhausted…that is fair game.
Pro- Tip: these are great roll-play moments!
Pro- Pro- Tip – Hold person is a slightly different spell. You glue the opponent in place, but can still hurt them without causing a save. So cast, and then beat away at them.
